After a few weeks in the same city, even Budapest can start to feel small. You know your café, your tram stop and your market, and the weekend arrives with nothing planned. The good news is that Central Europe’s rail network makes it easy to leave for two days and be back for Monday. These weekend trips from Budapest by train are chosen for long-stay expats: short journeys, simple tickets and places worth the detour in autumn and winter.
We manage 100+ apartments with a local Budapest team, and guests staying one to six months ask us for the same thing every month: where can we go for a weekend? Here is what we recommend.
How Weekend Travel by Train Works From Budapest
Most international and long-distance trains leave from Keleti station, with others from Nyugati and Déli. Journey times below are approximate and change with the timetable, so always check the MÁV website or app before you go. For domestic trips, booking a seat reservation on busy Friday and Sunday trains is worth the small extra cost, and a smartphone ticket saves queuing. If you live here for a month or longer, our Budapest public transport guide explains how to get to the stations quickly with a monthly pass.
Vienna: The Classic Two-Day Escape
Vienna is roughly two and a half hours away on the direct Railjet, which makes it the most popular weekend trip. Go for the coffee houses, the museums and the Christmas markets from mid-November. It is also a useful reality check: rents and restaurant prices there are noticeably higher, which is one reason many expats choose to live in Budapest and visit Vienna rather than the other way around. Book early for the best fares and leave Sunday evening to be home the same night.
Bratislava: Easy, Compact and Cheap
Bratislava sits about two and a half hours by direct train, and its old town can be seen comfortably in a day. It suits a relaxed Saturday with a castle walk, a riverside lunch and an early train back. Combine it with an overnight stay if you want to try the local wine bars. It is the simplest foreign city for a first weekend away because the language is easy to navigate and the centre is small.
Eger: Wine, Baroque Streets and Thermal Water
Eger is the favourite Hungarian escape for a reason. Trains from Keleti take roughly two hours, and the town offers a castle, a baroque centre and the Valley of the Beautiful Women, where you can taste Bull’s Blood wine in family cellars. In late autumn it is quiet and atmospheric, and the local thermal baths are a good wet-weather plan. Stay one night so you can enjoy a cellar dinner without watching the clock.

- Szentendre — an artists’ town on the Danube reached by the HÉV suburban railway in about 40 minutes. Good for galleries, museums and a lazy lunch.
- Győr — a pleasant baroque city on the Vienna line, around an hour and a half away, ideal if you want a calm day without a long journey.
- Visegrád and Esztergom — the Danube Bend, best by a combination of train and bus or boat in good weather.
- Balatonfüred — the lake in off-season is quiet and cheap, with walks along the promenade and empty beaches.
Seasonal Tips for Autumn and Winter
Daylight is short from November, so start early and check opening hours: many attractions close or reduce hours in the off-season. Bring layers, because unheated carriages and waiting platforms get cold. Our guide to Budapest in October and November covers weather and events if you are planning around the calendar. Christmas market season is the best time for Vienna and Bratislava, but trains fill up on Saturdays, so reserve ahead.
Budget: What a Weekend Away Really Costs
Train tickets within Hungary are inexpensive, and international fares vary with how early you book. A one-night trip to Eger or Bratislava is usually far cheaper than a long-haul flight and needs no airport time. Compare this with your monthly spending in our cost of living in Budapest breakdown to decide how many trips fit your budget.
Why a Furnished Apartment Makes Weekend Trips Easier
A fully equipped apartment lets you pack light, leave luggage safely and come back to a comfortable base with a kitchen and laundry. For stays of a month or more, a central location near a metro line to Keleti or Nyugati saves time every Friday. Our team will suggest the right district for your travel pattern, and weekly cleaning keeps the apartment fresh while you are away.
