Lunar New Year in Budapest 2027 — Where to Celebrate and Where to Stay With Family

← LifeSpace Budapest Book Directly — No OTA Fees

Lunar New Year in Budapest falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, the start of the Year of the Goat, and the city marks it with a free weekend festival at Chinatown Budapest in District X, a cultural afternoon at the China Cultural Center in District XIV and a ticketed Chinese New Year concert at Müpa. If you are coming with family or a group, book an apartment or hotel near the events you care about by December, because February is also a busy trade-fair month in Budapest.

We have managed apartments and hotels in Budapest since 2019, and our team speaks Chinese and Vietnamese as well as English and Hungarian, so every winter we help Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese families plan exactly this trip. This guide covers the dates, where the celebrations happen, which districts make sense, and how to keep a family holiday or a reunion with relatives working in Hungary simple.

When Is Lunar New Year 2027?

The first day of the lunar year is Saturday 6 February 2027. It is celebrated as Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), Korean Seollal and Vietnamese Tết, and the celebrations continue for two weeks until the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February 2027. Two points matter for planning:

  • It is a normal working period in Hungary. Lunar New Year is not a public holiday here, so shops, offices, museums and public transport run as usual. That is good news for visitors: nothing is closed.
  • The big community events usually fall on the nearest weekend. In 2026, when the new year began on Tuesday 17 February, the Chinatown festival was held on 7–8 February and the Müpa concert on 27 February. With the 2027 new year on a Saturday, expect events around 6–7 February and again around the Lantern Festival, but always check the final programme, which is usually published in January.

Where to Celebrate Lunar New Year in Budapest

Chinatown Budapest (District X, Kőbánya)

The largest public celebration in recent years has been the Chinese New Year Festival at Chinatown Budapest, Jegenye utca 30, 1107 Budapest, a compact complex of Chinese restaurants, shops and karaoke on the east side of the city. In 2026 the Chinese community organised two days of lion and dragon dances, a gala show, Sichuan opera face-changing, tai chi, calligraphy, paper-cutting, hanfu dress-up and festive street food. Admission was free, with small fees for tea tasting and some craft workshops. It is very family-friendly in the daytime; go early, as the stage programme started at 10:00.

China Cultural Center Budapest (District XIV)

The China Cultural Center at Stefánia út 77, 1143 Budapest, hosted a free New Year afternoon in 2026 with sugar painting, dough figurines, long-spout teapot tea art and face-changing. It is calmer than the festival and ideal with young children or grandparents. District XIV is also where our Amadeus Hotel and several of our apartments are located.

The Grand Chinese New Year Concert at Müpa (District IX)

Müpa Budapest, the national arts centre on the Danube in District IX, has staged a Grand Chinese New Year Concert with erhu, pipa, guzheng and percussion. It is ticketed, sells through the Müpa website, and makes a good evening for adults during the festive fortnight.

Korean and Vietnamese celebrations in Budapest tend to be community-led rather than large public festivals: family gatherings, association dinners and events organised by churches, temples, schools and business groups. If you are visiting relatives, they will know the local events; if you are new, our neighbourhood guide for Asian expats in Budapest explains where the communities, restaurants and Asian groceries are.

Where to Stay for Lunar New Year in Budapest

Budapest is compact and public transport is reliable, so you can reach every event from any central district. The better question is how your group travels and what else you want to do. Our 100+ apartments are in Districts V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and XIV, plus two hotels:

  • District XIV (Zugló) — families arriving by car and larger groups. Close to the China Cultural Center and the City Park, calmer streets and bigger apartments. Our Amadeus Hotel here has 39 rooms and free parking, which is rare in Budapest and useful if relatives drive in from elsewhere in Hungary or from a neighbouring country.
  • District VIII (Józsefváros) — a hotel with full service. Our Triple M Hotel has 40 rooms and 2 apartments, a 24/7 reception and its own restaurant, which helps when flights land late or when part of the family prefers hotel comfort. It sits on the eastern side of the centre, towards Chinatown. See our 8th district guide.
  • District IX (Ferencváros) — for the Müpa concert and riverside walks. Good value apartments with quick tram connections along the Danube.
  • Districts V, VI and VII — first-time visitors. Central for sightseeing, the Danube and restaurants of every cuisine. Ask for a courtyard-facing bedroom if you want quiet nights.

Family and Group Stays: Apartment or Hotel?

For a New Year reunion, the kitchen is often the deciding factor. Making dumplings, tteokguk or bánh chưng together is half the celebration, and a furnished apartment with a full kitchen and a dining table lets you do that. Hotel rooms suit guests who want service, breakfast and someone at reception at 2am.

Many groups combine both: grandparents in a hotel room, parents and children in a two-bedroom apartment nearby. For short holiday stays we quote by date, so please ask us for current rates. For longer stays, our reference bands are €700–950 per month for a studio or one-bedroom, €1,000–1,500 per month for a two-bedroom, and €60–90 per night for a hotel room booked for 14 nights or more, all including weekly cleaning, linen and WiFi. That longer option is popular with relatives visiting family members on assignment in Hungary, who stay for several weeks around the holiday.

Delegations, company teams and associations booking several units can ask for one booking, one contact person and one invoice; our guide to group bookings for teams of 5+ explains how it works. Book early: trade fairs at Hungexpo in late January and mid-February bring exhibitors into the city at the same time as the festive weekends.

Practical Tips for a February Trip

  1. Pack for real winter. Early February in Budapest is usually cold, often around or below freezing at night, and outdoor festival stages mean standing for hours. Warm shoes and layers matter more than anything else.
  2. Bring red envelopes, but plan cash. Hungary uses the forint (HUF), not the euro. Cards work almost everywhere, but small stalls may prefer cash.
  3. Shop for ingredients early. Asian groceries are easy to find in Budapest, but popular New Year items sell out in the last days. Our apartments have equipped kitchens, so you can cook the family meal yourself.
  4. Use public transport to the festival. In 2026 the Chinatown organisers recommended trams and buses to Mázsa tér or the train to Kőbánya Alsó; parking near the venue fills quickly.
  5. Talk to us in your language. Our team speaks Chinese and Vietnamese, so arrival instructions, special requests and small problems can be handled without translation apps. Korean-speaking guests can write to us in English.
  6. Combine the trip with a thermal bath. A warm soak after a cold festival day is the most Budapest way to celebrate. Our LifeSpace guest blog has winter guides for baths, markets and day trips.
